How do you set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in Melton?

To set up a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in Melton you should contact your local Community Initiatives Co-ordinator: - on 0116 2222222 Ext. 4571

Alternatively, you can contact your local Beat Officer or Police Community Support Officer. These can be found by visiting the force website, selecting ‘policing in your area’, clicking on ‘Melton Mowbray’ and again on ‘policing where you live’.

Why Join NHW in Melton?

Many NHW schemes are established to encourage residents to watch out for each other and report suspicious incidents to the police but often nothing more. However, in Melton we pride ourselves on having active NHW schemes that not only do the above, but also promote crime prevention and community campaigns to address particular local problems. One of the initial stages for NHW schemes in Melton is to identify what residents see as key problems in their area. These are then prioritised and strategies are formulated to combat the issues.

Melton Mowbray has adopted a Neighbourhood Policing strategy and by doing so Melton Police have committed themselves to help neighbourhoods help themselves by serving as a catalyst for local organising and education efforts.

Street co-ordinators and NHW members can benefit in several ways from having an active scheme in the district of Melton:

 You can become connected to the VC Relay system, where you are sent regular text, e-mail, phone, or fax messages to inform you of local crime trends, incidents occurring in your area and general communication messages sent directly from your local police station.

 You and your neighbours can receive crime prevention surveys from a trained Crime Prevention Officer.

 You can prompt a better community spirit with neighbours looking out for one another.

 You can apply to various bodies for funding to support initiatives in your street/area to tackle local issues.

 You can receive the latest crime prevention devices at a discounted rate.

 You may be entitled to a reduced rate on your home insurance policy.

 You can mark all valuables in and around your home with your post-code. This can act as a deterrent to theft and can aid recovery should an item be stolen.

 You can make your area a safer place to live, work, visit and enjoy.

Are You Willing To Become The Street Co-ordinator For Your Local Area?

Invariably the person who makes the first enquiry and arranges the next stages is asked by residents to take on this role. You will need to decide on the boundaries of the proposed scheme. Consider what you would call your neighbourhood, by asking yourself, are there any natural lines of demarcation that your neighbours readily recognise?

 You will need to canvass your neighbours to find out the amount of support that a NHW scheme would have. Without good levels of initial support there is little likelihood that the scheme will flourish. To help you achieve this survey, you will given a copy (or copies) of a Residents Questionnaire.

 Once the survey is completed, you need to discuss the results with your police Community Initiatives Co-ordinator, based a Melton Local policing Unit.

 If sufficient interest is indicated, the next stage is to arrange an initial public meeting. It will be yours and your neighbour’s responsibility to locate a suitable venue.

 It should be stressed that publicity for the meeting is very important, because unless a good level of attendance is achieved the scheme may not be able to go ahead.

 There will be a police representative at the meeting, together with, in some areas, a NHW Support Group representative. The purpose of the meeting is to inform residents on how to establish a NHW scheme. A public airing of general concerns should not deflect this purpose. If there are particular crime or disorder problems that need to be discussed with the police, this should take place separately, with the NHW scheme involved as part of the solution.
